What Will Happen in 2012?
What will happen in 2012? It is a question that many are asking.
We have all heard that the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012.
Does that mean that the Mayans thought this date was when the world will end? Certainly the media and Hollywood movies would try to get us to believe that.
End of world predictions have been with us since the beginning of the written word, from ancient civilizations to more modern "prophets".
Over the centuries many dates have been announced as the end of days. Every religion has had at least one prophet who has predicted (and sometimes re predicted when he got it wrong) the date the world will end.
I have to say, if we look around with fearful eyes, we can certainly point to signs of the end of days. Volcanic eruptions, massive destructive earthquakes, political unrest, melting polar ice caps, financial melt downs. It all reeks of doom and gloom.
But does it have to be that way?
If you look at the more spiritual writings about what will happen in 2012 and beyond, you often see a very different story.
For the most part, I will let the experts talk in their own words about end of world predictions and the future, 2012 and beyond:
"Every 5125 years, the Maya say, one cycle on Earth ends and another begins. There are five cycles, each of them with characteristics roughly corresponding to our passage through a twenty-four-hour day. The first of Earth's cycles is comparable to a galactic morning, when our solar system is just approaching the central light of the universe. The second cycle, midday, is our solar system's closest proximity to the universal central light. The galactic afternoon, or third cycle occurs as our solar system begins moving away from the central light. The fourth cycle corresponds to the night, when our solar system is at its farthest from the central light. And the fifth cycle is that "darkness before the dawn" period, as our solar system pulls away from being devoid of light and moves toward its first cycle of morning again.1
The prophecy of the Mayan calendar is that our solar system was slowly ending its fifth cycle, its "darkest before the dawn" in 1987, moving toward the morning of the first cycle that will officially arrive in 2012. And how we use the brief years between now and then will determine whether the impending birth of the "morning" is destructive or productive. Negativity, violence greed, cruelty, the lust for power, and the systematic desecration of nature and its sacred inhabitants will guarantee a catastrophic transition from the fifth cycle back to the first, while a global nurturing of kindness, respect, unity, charity, and a celebration of the sanctity of our natural planet and all its living creatures can, by our choice, create a cyclical transition into a truly golden age. So 2012, the Maya promise, will mark a profound change among us on Earth. What kind of change it will be is entirely up to us."1
"The Maya viewed our emergence into a post-2012 world as the beginning of a new cycle of history. From this perspective, the solstice on December 21, 2012, becomes a powerful window for our collective emergence into our greatest potential. Such a moment is so rare that we have been preparing for it since the end of the last world age, and it will be another 26,000 years before the same opportunity cycles around again for our descendants."2
"As evolution biologist Elisabet Sahtouris tells us, when young species are over populating, polluting, and competing, they either learn enlightened self-interest, negotiation, cooperation, and synergy or they become extinct. The same seems to apply to us. The only difference is that we are conscious of our situation, that we can destroy or evolve ourselves."3
From cycles of weather to the balance of carbon dioxide between the oceans and the atmosphere, nature shows us that a pattern will repeat until something new replaces it. The change that accompanies the 2012 convergence of cycles is a rare opportunity to wipe away the patterns that we’ve outgrown from the past. At the same time, it’s also a precious choice point to set healthy, new patterns in place for our future and the future that belongs to our children . . . and to theirs.4
"What we are all needing to do is shed our own prejudgments and prejudices, and be able to become more complete within our self; more loving of ourselves. The way through first was going to be through love of ourselves—for us to get any further forward."5
"The story of human life on Earth is yet to be determined. Our evolution depends on whether we are willing to make changes in our individual and collective beliefs and behaviors, and whether we are able to make these changes in time. The good news is that biology and evolution are on our side. Evolution – like heaven – is not a destination, but a practice.6
A miraculous healing awaits this planet once we accept our new responsibility to collectively tend the Garden. When a critical mass of people truly own this belief in their hearts and minds and begin living from these truths, our world will emerge from the darkness in what will amount to a consciousness-based Worldshift – a spontaneous evolution for humans, by humans."5
So what WILL happen in 2012 and beyond?
We are at a choice point. We can continue to travel down the path of greed, and whatever works for me OR we can look at making the world for all to live in fairly and equally. We can save our physical world or watch it die.
