Step 3: Receive

Okay, we have really clarified exactly what it is we desire, and we have found ways to believe that it can happen for us, now what?

The third aspect of the law of attraction (or the Secret as in the Secret movie and book) is being open to receiving what it is we desire. So what does that mean?

Being open to receiving means being in a state of positive expectancy - really believing that it is coming.

It also means being clear in our thoughts about why we want what we want. Let me explain.

I saw a woman at a conference once who explained it so beautifully. I wish I could remember her name so I could credit her for this.

So many times we wonder why something is not coming to us when we have been very clear about what we want and feel that we really believe in its possibility in our lives. What is holding us back then?

There is a small, but absolutely crucial, part of the concept of receiving. It is determining if your underlying thoughts and beliefs about what you want are "to" or "away from" thoughts.

"To" thoughts are thoughts that bring you closer to what you want. "Away from" thoughts will continue to hold it away from you. Here is how:

The key principal in the law of attraction is that whatever thoughts you give your attention to are the signals you are sending out to the universe about that subject. And universe always responds to our thoughts. Always.

What does that mean? It means pay attention to your thoughts and to the words you use about a subject.

Edgar Cayce said it well when he said: "Thoughts are things and mind is the builder."

We all have underlying thoughts about why we want something. Take money for example. If you are using the laws of attraction to consciously create more financial abundance, what are your underlying thoughts about financial prosperity and why you want it?

Here are examples of "away from" thoughts:

"I want more money because that person has lots and lots and I don't."

"I want more money because I don't have enough. I worry about what will happen to me."

"I want more because the world is unfair. The rich get richer and the rest of us get poorer."

"I want a better relationship with my kids because I can't stand it this way any more."

These thoughts are really sending out signals of lack and will continue to bring lack to you.

The universe doesn't understand the word NO. So when you say, no I don't want that, and concentrate on the negative by worrying or being fearful, you are really saying YES bring to me this thing (lack of money for example) that I keep focusing on or worrying about. Whatever you keep your focus on is what the universe identifies as your desire.

It is really important then to have positive thoughts AND feelings about why you want more money, or better relationships. We can think positive thoughts all day long, but if our underlying feelings are negative, it keeps what we want away from us - thus the term "away from" thoughts and feelings.

The trick to the receiving part of the law of attraction is to get yourself into a state of positive feelings about the subject of your desire, of knowing that it's coming, or even better, picturing in your mind that it's already here.

Esther Hicks, who channels a being named Abraham, has written the best books I have found on using the laws of attraction. My favorite of all of her books is "Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires", which I have read at least twice.

In this book Esther explains in detail how to get to the point where you are truly attracting what it is you desire. She also includes exercises that help turn us in the direction we want to go. If you are serious about using the laws of attraction that already operate in our lives daily to help you get what you really want, any of Esther Hicks' books are "must haves".

In the Hicks' books, Abraham states that what you need to do to attract what you desire into your life is to give your attention to what you want, purely and positively.

Here is what to do:

Sit quietly for a minute or two focusing in a positive way on what you desire. Think of how you will feel when it arrives in your life. Try as much as you can to feel that feeling as though it is happening already.

"Whatever you are giving your attention to is already vibrating. And when you give your attention to it, if you maintain your focus for as little as 17 seconds, you begin to include its vibration, whatever it is, in your vibration."1

If you can hold your attention to that pure positive thought about what it is you truly want for 68 seconds, Abraham states that the tide will begin to turn and it will begin to flow to you. Do this every day, at least once a day, making sure your thoughts about why you want your desire come from a pure, positive place, not from fear, envy or worry.

"Since you have control over what thoughts you offer, what could be more just than the powerful Law of Attraction responding equally to everyone who offers a vibration? Once you gain control over the thoughts you think, your sense of injustice will subside and will be replaced with the exuberance for life and the zest to create that you were born with."1
